Effect of Substrates on the Growth of Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium ¢¥ Moon Venus ¢¥ Seedlings

Abstract
Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium ¢¥Moon Venus¢¥ seedlings were cultivated to elucidate the effects of several substrates having different physico-chemical properties. The number of leaves and leaf length of Cymbidium goeringii grown in Ceratone and bark showed better growth than any other substrates. It seemed to be due to its suitable porosity (26%) and water holding rate (42%). The more porosity were in pots, the higher the number of roots and root length of Cymbidium goeringii were. Cymbidium ¢¥Moon Venus¢¥ seedlings grown in mixed substrates were vigorous in appearance than in simple substrates. It maybe resulted from the improvement of physical characteristics of substrates, especially higher bulk density, water holding rates and porosity. Regression coeffiecient between growing status of Cymbidium goeringii and physico-chemical properties of the substrates suggested that porosity in pot play an important role in manifesting the growth of Cymbidium goeringii. For Cymbidium ¢¥Moon Venus¢¥ seedlings, high water holding rates(40-50%) and suitable bulk density (0.2-0.3) seemed to be required for proper growing substrates.
